Student Vote! Tuesday, May 2!

All the intermediate students at Sunset will be taking part in the Student Vote! Program. It’s sponsored by Elections BC. It’s a program that allows the students to experience what it’s like to vote in a provincial election. We have been discussing the various levels of government in Socials this year.

The students in my class will be running the polling station for the event. They will act as scrutineers, election clerks and election officers.

The homework was to discuss the election and talk about the importance of voting. Unfortunately, there was no All-Candidates meeting at NISS the students could watch. The grade 5’s took part last year for the federal election and it was an excellent learning experience. According to statistics from Elections BC and Canada, students that take part in the Student Vote Program are more likely to be active participants in the actual elections when they reach 18 years of age.
