Recorder Order Forms

The grade 5 class will be learning recorders in Music class this year. An order form to purchase a recorder for $10 will be coming home Friday. These are fairly good quality recorders made by the Aulos Music Company and ordered from Empire Music in Vancouver.

The school has some recorders that students can borrow for those that do not wish to purchase one. Unfortunately, they just cannot be taken home so students cannot practice. They will be washed between classes, if we need to share.

Plant Orders

The deVry Plant Order was sent out last week. This is a big fundraiser for the Sunset PAC. Unfortunately, I did not realize that it came out so early, as I was trying to have the Coffee Order out at a different time.

The money raised in the coffee order goes directly to your child’s individual Camp Homewood trip total. The money raised in the Plant order goes towards one of the many great things provided by PAC, such as, computers, iPads, playground equipment, gym equipment, etc.

Letter to a famous Canadian – Rough Copy due Friday

Students are writing letters to someone famous that inspires them for Language Arts.  I have encouraged them to choose someone that lives or works (i.e. hockey player) in Canada so that they can include a self-addressed stamped envelope. There is a possibility that the students may receive an autograph (no guarantees).

Rough Copies are due Friday! We will be editing, starting good copies and looking up addresses Friday.

Some people that have written back or sent autographs are: many Canucks (including Burrows, Kesler, the Sedins), Rick Hansen, Rosie McLennan, Amber Marshall, Willlie Mitchell and Mike Cammellari. It usually takes 3-6 months to receive something back.

The letter needs to be a full page and include a paragraph about themselves (just first name and no personal info such as phone number or address – the school’s address will be the return address) and a paragraph about why that person inspires them, for example, a past student wrote to Loungo and discussed he was the reason that child played goalie and always wore Lou’s number.

This activity to help provide students with a real audience for their writing.

We will be walking to the post office to mail letters hopefully next Friday, Oct. 14. We will time the walking field trip with a stop at Subway for lunch. The date will depend on the weather.

October Newsletter

In an effort to save paper costs, the school is trying an electronic newsletter. I will try and post the newsletter on the class website. The Sunset School website – www.sunsetschool.ca also has all the newsletters posted, just click the “newsletter” heading for a list of all the newsletters throughout the year.

The newsletter will be emailed to parents/guardians that indicated that they wanted it sent to them. You can always

Camp Homewood Fundraiser! Coffee Orders!

The first fundraiser for the Grade 5 Camp Homewood Trip started today, the Coffee Orders!  Coffee Orders must be pre-paid.

The annual Camp Homewood trip occurs near the end of the school year and students will be travelling to Camp Homewood on Quadra Island for 5 Days! The costs usually run just over $300 (depending on bus costs, etc.) Students earn $6 per pound of coffee sold. Last year it was only about $5, but I will be in Campbell River the weekend the coffee is scheduled to be ready and will pick it up to save the shipping costs to Port McNeill.

The Grade 5 teachers will be hosting an information meeting on the Camp Homewood trip at some point in the next month.  If you have any questions, please email, call or just come to school and I can try to answer them for you.
