Fire Safety Week

The homework tonight was assigned by volunteer fireman Mr. Brooks! He spoke the class about fire safety and asked students to complete the following homework assignments:

  1. Have your parents test all the smoke detectors in the house – a. to make sure the batteries are good & b. the expiry date on the smoke detectors (they’re only good for 10 years and should be replaced).
  2. Make sure that your family has an emergency escape plan in case of fire – with a meeting place away from the house.  He gave students a paper to review emergency numbers and a space for drawing out the plan.
  3. Open House at the Firehall – Thursday, Oct. 8 @ 7 pm!

The fireman also talked about having a smoke detector near or in every bedroom. Their motto for this fire safety week is Hear the Beep where you Sleep!!!

Over $50 raised for Terry Fox!

The grade 5/6 class brought in about $50 in donations to rent a gorilla for Terry Fox! Not only did the gorillas raise a little money, they also inspired many great stories and some descriptive writing using adjectives.

All Candidates Meeting at NISS

Our first unit in Social Studies this year is studying Canadian government structures. The class has been working with a great resource created by Elections Canada called Student Vote. We have been discussing the different types of governments: democracy vs. dictatorship. We will also be discussing the various levels of government (municipal, provincial & federal).

As part of our learning, we have been invited to attend the all candidates meeting for students at NISS on Tuesday, October 6 @ 2:00 pm. Our class and Mrs. Lok’s class will be walking over around 1:45 pm and returning by the dismissal bell at 3:05 pm.

As a reminder to parents, there will be an All Candidates Meeting at NISS that same evening. Parents are also welcome to attend the afternoon session.

Thank you to Mr. Abbot, a teacher at NISS, for organizing the event.

No Planner Entry Today

The class was late getting back from Cheslakees this afternoon, but there was no homework for the planners.

Students hopefully have something to read at home and can spend 20-30 minutes reading a day for homework this weekend. I will be starting a home reading program next week, where the students can earn tickets towards a monthly book draw for reading at home.

Book Orders Due Oct. 8

Scholastic Book Orders went out today. There were three different orders because were are a 5/6 split class and there is a 4/5 and 6/7 book order, so Mrs. Plumridge added both of those to cover a wide variety of reading levels. She also added the special Halloween order form for fun.

Math & Writing homework

Most students finished the Math sheet in class, it was short word problem worksheet with subtraction questions.

Students are also working on their “A Day in the Life of my Gorilla” story from the Rent-a-gorilla for Terry Fox day. They should have their good copies done this week. They can type them or write them out.
