Assignments Due & Test Friday!
Fort Rupert Elementary is hosting a Yayuma at the Fort Rupert Big House.A Yayuma is a presentation of dances and songs from the potlatch that the Fort Rupert students have learning as part of their culture program. Mrs. Ellis will be spending some time with our grade 4’s talking about some of the regalia, masks, songs and dances the students may see Tuesday.
Our class was invited to attend. It will be Tuesday, June 2. A permission form should have come home Wednesday. Please sign and return by Monday. We also welcome a few parents to join us as chaperones.
The bus will be leaving promptly Tuesday morning, so please do not be late.
Our class had the extreme pleasure to welcome Science Venture to our classroom today. They are students from UVIC that provided science lessons to a few different classes. We had Weather or Not, which were a variety of activities to teach the students about weather.
The students should have brought home a cyanotype photograph. The kids were given a treated piece of paper and placed a variety of opaque objects on the paper and then left them in the sun. The objects left an impression on the paper, as the object blocked the sun and the chemicals on the paper react to the UV rays from the sun.

It’s swimming lessons tomorrow (Wed. @ 11:00 am). Please remember your swim suit & towel.
“I’m Bored!” – Summer is coming and that is a common phrase spoken by kids. For the last month of school I am putting together the “I’m Bored Hobby Project.” The premise of the assignment is that each student must decide on a hobby they would like to learn or improve. The hobby must use materials we have at school or the student can bring from home.
Some of the ideas the kids brainstormed are:
Magic, Juggling, Friendship Bracelets, Knitting, Sewing, Puppetry/Ventriloquism, Drawing, Sketching, Cartooning, Painting, Paper Models, Cub Badges, Card games – Cribbage.
The assignment tonight is to decide on what hobby they want to learn.
If students have “Kit” for something, like magic, friendship bracelets, etc. that they would like to bring, with the instructions and materials, that works. They will be expected to find at least three different sources of information – books (library, home), websites (including Youtube), magazines, videos and mentors (mom, dad, grandparent – just take some digital photos/video).
Students will be marked on the following:
1. Using Time Appropriately/wisely
2. Presentation to the class about what they learned
3. Create a Bibliography/List of References – Where did you find info how to learn your hobby? – Websites, Youtube, Library Book (Reference # – i.e. all magic books are 793.8 at any library.)
4. Students will demonstrate what they learned and try to teach a classmate the basic skill.
There is no Unit 30.

Assignments Due and Test Friday.
The class voted to go to Storey’s Beach for a class field trip. I have booked the bus for Monday, June 8th. There is a low tide of 0.6 at 11:30 am that day, so it should allow for lots of sand! It also happens to be World Oceans Day.
I will be looking for some parent volunteers to join us, especially someone that can bring a truck and some firewood for a fire to roast hot dogs and marshmallows.
I will be sending a notice/permission form home in a week.
Finger crossed for a beautiful sunny day!
Another walking field trip I hope to take the students on is to the public library and to play the animal prey/predator game. With this field trip, students will be able to get a library card and sign a couple books out for silent reading. The last sign out for the school’s library is around June 8th, so we usually do this field trip at some point after the school library closes for inventory. We also do a Subway lunch that day as well.
The class was going to to complete the spelling test Friday afternoon, but we were asked unexpectedly to walk to Cheslakees (we thought they were coming our way.) One of the Kindergarteners was sick and could not make the trek over.
We did not have time to complete the spelling test, so the students can practice over the weekend and we’ll do it Monday morning. The words are posted on an earlier posting, just scroll down.
Have a great weekend.
